Agreement signing to support Oman’s Net Zero 2050 target and Vision 2040 goals
Muscat, Oman – 12th May 2025 – talabat, the Middle East’s leading on-demand delivery platform and EVO, Oman’s premier green-mobility provider and an OOMCO subsidiary, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch a six-month pilot of swappable-battery e-bikes, marking the nation’s first large-scale electric last-mile delivery trial.
The ceremony, held under the patronage of His Excellency Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shamakhi, Undersecretary for Transport at the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology during Oman Sustainability Week and was attended by representatives from MTCIT represented in Green Mobility team, MOEM, the Oman Vision 2040 Office, the Oman Net Zero Centre, and Oman Oil Marketing Company.
Stéphane Berton, Managing Director, talabat Oman, said: “At talabat, we believe the future of delivery should be smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable. Our collaboration with EVO reflects our commitment to innovation and Oman’s Net Zero ambitions. This pilot is a real action step toward greener delivery solutions that benefit riders, customers, and communities.”
The initiative supports Oman’s decarbonization roadmap and talabat’s goal of building a greener, more efficient delivery infrastructure. The pilot will assess e-bikes' contribution to reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing urban livability.
Ziad El Helou, CEO, EVO, said: “Reaching Net-Zero mobility means addressing every transport segment from passenger vehicles to last-mile delivery. Our pilot with talabat marks an exciting step in that journey. By introducing e-bikes into Oman’s delivery ecosystem, EVO is expanding its portfolio beyond passenger and commercial EV solutions to include sustainable micro-mobility. We’re proud to collaborate with talabat in proving that low-carbon, last-mile logistics is both practical and impactful.”
Thuraiya Al Wahaibi, Logistics Operation Specialist, Ministry of Transport Communication and IT, said: "This long-awaited pilot project for food and ready-meal delivery using electric bikes marks a significant step toward sustainable and efficient last-mile services. The Ministry of Transport plays a central role in regulating the sector and facilitating procedures related to electric vehicles, and consistently seeks integration and collaboration with the private sector in various initiatives under its mandate. The Wilayat of Bausher has been selected as the first phase of implementation, in partnership with Talabat and EVO Oman."
Under the project, EVO will provide 10 e-bikes and three battery swapping and charging stations, deployed with talabat’s logistics partners across select OOMCO stations around Muscat. Performance will be measured against operational and environmental benchmarks, including battery life, delivery efficiency versus internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and bikes, on-time rates, rider feedback, and safety outcomes.
MTCIT is orchestrating Oman’s comprehensive green-mobility roadmap. Key initiatives include solar-powered port infrastructure, biodiesel and future hydrogen-fuelled vessels, and the rollout of hydrogen corridors for heavy-duty trucks and buses. The Ministry is also enabling a nationwide passenger-EV charging network, mandating low-emission ground-support equipment at airports, and supporting fleet-scale electrification for commercial logistics. Against this backdrop, the talabat–EVO e-bike pilot advances MTCIT’s agenda by adding a zero-emission, ultra-efficient solution for last-mile delivery. The program is targeted to deliver tangible benefits, no tail-pipe emissions, minimal noise, high energy efficiency, and a smaller carbon footprint while complementing Oman’s broader commercial, passenger, marine, and aero-mobility decarbonization efforts.
The quieter operation and zero-emissions of e-bikes also supports healthier and calmer urban environments. Additionally, the partners are committed to responsible battery lifecycle management through recycling and ethical sourcing.
Following the pilot evaluation, talabat will explore opportunities to scale electric mobility solutions across its Oman operations, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and environmental stewardship.
